"How do I install a two piece putter grip?"

This question comes up all the time, so we decided to simply document what we do.

The two piece putter grip can be used on belly or long putters, and can be a little intimidating to install for the first timer. It's really not difficult, and we'll discuss a couple of tricks for making this installation as professional as possible.

The first thing you need to know is that the USGA only permits a two piece putter grip under the following conditions - from the Rules of Golf:

A putter may have two grips provided each is circular in cross-section, the axis of each coincides with the axis of the shaft, and they are separated by at least 1.5 inches (38.1 mm).

This Winn putter grip is a perfect example of a legal two piece grip.

The installation of these grips can be a little intimidating, but really it's not difficult if you follow a couple of simply guidelines.

The first thing you need to do is to locate the bottom of the lower grip on the shaft. Mark this spot, and then place a piece of standard grip tape on the shaft starting from a spot about 1/2" above the lowest portion of the lower grip.

Be sure your grip tape extends over the butt end of the shaft about 1/2" as well, as this will help the grip slide over the hard edge of the shaft.

Before you install the lower grip section, mark the grip tape 1/2" below the top of the lower grip. You will cut the tape at this location around the shaft - but leaving the tape on the shaft intact - simply cut it through and leave it in place.

Locat a spot on the grip tape there the upper grip will go, 1/2" above the lowest portion of this grip and cut the tape around the shaft at this location as well. Again, do not remove the tape, simply cut it.

The diagram below will show you where these cuts should go relative the grip:

Once you have cut the tape under where the grip will go, you can install the lower section of grip as you normally would.

Use plenty of solvent and push the lower grip on the shaft all the way down to just below the end of the tape.

You can now remove the small piece of tape above the lower grip - between the two cut lines.  The reason you cut this tape first was to allow for easy removal from inside the lower grip - completely concealing the tape from view.

Use more solvent on the upper piece of tape, and install the upper grip section like you would a normal grip.

That's it!
