One of the things that we see on a daily basis are shafts with no flex markings on the exposed part of the shaft.
These shafts are marked only on the butt, and often this marking gets removed when the shaft is butt trimmed to length during assembly.
We do something very simple to preserve that shaft flex designation for the next guy who comes along.
Take a Sharpie marking pen in the appropriate color (usually black or silver) and write the Flex on the shaft butt - along with any tip trimming that might have been done. This will be under the grip, so you are leaving your mark for "the next guy".
When you have finished marking the shaft, cover the writing with clear packaging tape. We use 3M but any brand will do. In general, we don't take up more than a 1" space on the shaft butt here, so one strip of tape around the shaft will cover all of our "work". You can also put your company information of course, and maybe an identifying number for the club...
Covering it with the clear packing tape will make it virtually impervious to grip tape solvent as well as future weather and wear. It MAY be removed by an aggressive regrip down the road, but if they are paying attention they will be nice enough to cover your work again with clear tape :).
The clear packing tape sticks very well to the shaft, and if you wrap your wrap carefully around the shaft, there is no appreciable buildup (we do this right at the butt anyway...).
Grip tape sticks very well to the packing tape, and you are good to go.
The next guy to come along and want to identify what shaft flex you used in that club can do so easily by simply removing grip and tape.
You have done a good deed - even if you will never see the fruits of your labor.
