Here is one of the quick tips that we use in the shop here. I thought you might appreciate it.
When you have a shaft broken off at the hosel - and you have to step drill it out - there is a great time saver you can use.
Before drilling, heat the hosel as if you are going to pull the shaft with a shaft puller!
What happens is as you step drill the shaft remnant, it literally pops right out of the shaft before you ever finish the drilling operation!
Start with the smallest drill bit that will fit into the center of the shaft remnant, and move up a little at a time. Long before you reach the inside diameter of the hosel, the shaft remnant will pop out clean as a whistle!
If you don't heat the hosel first, this can also happen due to the heat generated by the drill bit (steel shafts), but if you do heat the hosel first, this even happens on graphite shafts, and you have much less mess to clean out of the hosel when you are finished drilling - as well as running no risk of damaging the hosel walls with an errant drill bit.
Happy clubmaking!
